The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted a tanker carrying 18,000 litres of substandard Automobile Gasoline Oil (AGO) in Abeokuta.
The Commandant of the corps, Remi Omolade Ekundayo confirmed the seizure, stating that laboratory tests revealed the product’s density fell below required standards, posing risks to vehicles and machinery.
The tanker driver, Bello Saheed, 48, and his accomplice, Azeez Taoreed, 45, were arrested during the operation.
Ekundayo stressed that the NSCDC frown vehemently at any act of crime that could breach the peace of the nation.
She noted that the Corps is committed to the security of lives of Ogun residents, warning that such illegal activities will not be allowed under the watch of the corps.
According to Commandant Ekundayo, “The driver carrying the product, Bello Saheed, and his accomplice, Azeez Taoreed, were arrested. The product is 18,000 litres. Because it is below the standard, it may be dangerous to vehicles, generators and any other machines that might use it.”
The NSCDC has launched an investigation into the matter. Ekundayo emphasized that the Corps would not condone substandard products, stressing the importance of adhering to safety standards.
“We are conducting our investigation and we will charge them to court if need be as soon as we complete the investigation. We are telling the public to always go with their weight bill if they are carrying a product and the product must meet with standard and the product must be directed to the right place”, she said.
Bello Saheed claimed they transported the product from Ibadan but lacked documentation, specifically the weigh bill, which raised suspicions.
Saheed explained that they experienced a flat tire in Abeokuta, prompting them to stop. He claimed their office weight bill was with a colleague who had returned to Ibadan to repair the tire.
He insisted that his employer was genuine, stating, “I don’t know much about the content in terms of quality since I am just a mere driver.”
The NSCDC however urged transporters to carry weight bills and ensure products meet standards to avoid prosecution.
