Subsidy Removal: Ogun launches CNG powered buses
Ogun State Government has launched Compressed Natural Gas powered buses to mitigate the effect of fuel subsidy removal and to support the climate.
The unveiling of the buses makes Ogun State the first state in Nigeria to achieve such a feat and stakeholders commended the Governor for being proactive.
In order to reduce the hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy, support the environment and to provide an efficient and affordable modern transport system for the people of the state, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has unveiled Compressed Natural Gas Powered buses.
The Governor said the buses will operate across different areas of the state including Sagamu Mowe-Ibafo beger axis, adding that it’s part of the multi modal transport system initiated by his administration.
His words “Besides reducing the cost of transportation of goods and services to prices that are lower than before deregulation , this will furthermore and particularly provide training and job opportunities for our thousands technicians and mechanics.
“We have given some buses to indefatigable civil servants /workers , we will be giving some buses to our student campuses . We earmarked some of these buses to operate from Mowe/Ibafo to Berger Lagos whilst others will be deployed to serve Kuto to Wole Soyinka Train Station in Laderin and some to serve the Onikolobo-Idi-Aba corridor and others will continue to serve the which is from Ita-Oshin to the Adatan corridor”,the Governor added .
He said the buses will operate along campuses and other busy areas to reduce transportation problems among students, workers and traders.
As we expand our fleet we will be deploying buses to our major cities Sagamu Otta Ijebu Ode to provide mass transportation for our citizens particularly for students .
“We have set up a gas refilling station in Obada Oko and are providing the required infrastructure across the state to support the buses, particularly gas refueling stations along the routes and terminals . In the coming days, these will come on board for operations.
Abiodun also noted that local mechanics have been trained by the foreign partners to ensure that they will be able to carry out the conversion and maintenance of vehicles in the state and special plants have been provided for refilling CNG.
He said “They have trained our local mechanics who have been actively involved in the conversion engineering and we will be setting up conversion stations across the three senatorial districts . This will allow us to commence the rapid conversion of commercial public mass transit buses and cars .
Members of the National Assembly in attendance, including Gboyega Nasir Isiaka praised the Governor for the project and called for more support for his administration.
Stakeholders including the Chairman of the State traditional Council, Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, leaders of labour unions and market leaders also commended the Governor and expressed their appreciation.
