We Record Murder Cases On Daily Basis – Ogun Police Commissioner, Ogunlowo
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has revealed a disturbing trend in the state’s crime statistics, with murder cases being reported on a daily basis.
The Commissioner disclosed this amid a series of recent incidents, including the killing of the kidnappers of Folashade Odumosu, the wife of retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, rescuing her and recovering the ransom used as bait.
Ogunlowo, during a visit to the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta yesterday, lamented that there is hardly a day the police command in the state won’t record a case of murder.
Ogunlowo said, “I think Ogun State is the most industrialized state in Nigeria today. If you look at the activities going on between here and the interchange, and that comes with a price. That means the highest number of people you will see crisscrossing the state are youths. They are mobile; they are versatile.
“There is hardly one day that we don’t record a case of murder. But for something like cultism, I’m sure you know more than I do because you get the news before us.
The Commissioner also mentioned cultism and kidnapping as some of the disturbing trends in the state, calling for public education and enlightenment for youths in Ogun State.
Ogunlowo, however, solicited synergy between the police and journalists to combat the trend.
The Commissioner told journalists, “These are areas where we want you to do more for us. Not just alerting us to these incidents, but at least letting the society also know that we harm ourselves when we harm other people.
“Yes, we have a high case; our high rate of cultism is reported every day. And you see, when they murder themselves, you see them cutting parts of their body away. Well, I think that is a price for them. I wouldn’t know.
“And we also want to thank you for your cooperation in recent days. We have had some cases of kidnapping, and we are thankful that members of the public cooperated with us.
“The two high-profile kidnappings we had two weeks ago, and then just about five days ago, we were able to overcome that, and we know that by the grace of God, those two gangs are zeroed. We will keep looking up to you,” Ogunlowo added.
