Crawford Varsity’s VC Seeks TETFund Support for Private Universities as Institution Marks 20th Anniversary, 17th Convocation

The Vice Chancellor of Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, Professor Solomon Olanrewaju Makinde, has appealed to the Federal Government to extend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) intervention to private universities in the country, noting that they also play vital roles in national development.
Makinde made the call on Wednesday while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun state council, led by their Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju at the university’s premises ahead of its 20th Anniversary and 17th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the institution’s Multipurpose Hall.
According to the Vice Chancellor, while TETFUND has continued to focus on public institutions, it is only fair and just that private universities also benefit, considering their contributions to the education sector and the overall development of the nation.
Makinde equally argued that both public and private universities in Nigeria contribute to the educational development of Nigeria.
He noted that Crawford University, a faith-based institution operating under the mantra of Knowledge with Godliness, received its operating licence from the Federal Government in 2005.
Makinde’s words “TETFUND has been focusing attention on public universities, and that assistance should be extended to private universities too because we also contribute to the overall development of the nation.
“No nation can rise above its educational system. In the name of fairness, the federal government should ensure that private universities also enjoy TETFUND.
“The anniversary lecture and the unveiling of the university’s commemorative book will be delivered by the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Emeritus Professor Peter Akinsola Okebukola, OFR”, he added.
However, the Vice Chancellor announced a 50 percent tuition discount for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who wish to enroll in the university for a top-up programme.
The upcoming convocation, Makinde added, will mark a significant milestone as the university celebrates two decades of academic excellence and graduates 575 students.
